I have built my own distortion pedal, but it's WAY too loud -- I can only turn the volume pot up to 9 o'clock or so. What's an easy mod that will reduce the overall output volume?

What circuit did you build? Can you post or link to the schematic?

If the volume rises too quickly and then doesn't seem to change much after that, you may have a linear taper pot as a volume control. If so, replacing it with an audio taper will give you a better range and won't "top out" the volume so much at a minimal setting. Good luck!
