I'm building a pedalboard. Literally. I went out, and bought some pine. It's light, and strong.
So far, I assembled the basic board. I will have to fine tune the layout. Right now, it weighs 2.5 lbs. When I'm done, I guessing under 2 lbs.! (Not counting pedals, etc.) It will be able to hold a power supply underneath. Maybe a power strip, also. My goals are: Light, durable, self contained (Power supply, and strip, etc.), good looking, cheap, easy to reproduce/fix. I built one awhile back and basically copied the NYC Pedalboard style. I've sold alot of stuff and its too big for me know so I'm looking around again.
I actually LOST one last night on ebay. By $5, it was used by Joey Mazzola of Sponge. The side had a female input for ac power with a quad box inside PLUS it was set up with a Nutric(sp?) output which was setup to route everything to an fx loop. $5 tho....dang.....On the bright side though I did buy his strat a month ago and I snagged his Naylor cab + roadcase yesterday too. =) |

building pedalboards is really fun....hopefully who have had/will have a good time! Show some pics when you get it done! Here's my board, I built everything out of scratch:
All the coupler cables are wired underneath and up to the next pedals. All the patch cables are wired underneath the board to a 1 spot too. I got more pics too if ya want em' MY GEAR: Fender Strat/Epiphone Sheraton--> RMC Wizard Wah-> TU-2-> 69 Fuzz-> FD II-> Roctron Talkbox--> 79 Marshall JMP (50w mv) & 1960ax Checkerboard Cab. |

I may build a TB looper or two, and mount them into the bottom of the board. That way a couple of loops are built in, and I simply plug in the appropriate pedals. All you'd see were a 1/4" jack, or 3 on the top, or front of the board. Hmmm.....

Here's the item # 7355059644.
I think that'll still pull it up. I got the stuff last night to build one of those quad boxes. I'm going to alternate the direction of the recepticles so I can get 2 wall warts on there. |

Jeff on anoter note I was wondering what you used to put that 18 volt adapter together? i may try to do something like that soon (i could just get a dc brick or something but) im looking for a project or two so i may get you to give me the details thursday, im anxious to see your design. not original LLC, the other one! you dig? dont forget to pet my constipated duck. |

The jacks and switches at RS are junk. I wouldn't use them in a pedal. Check out http://www.smallbearelec.com for parts |

dude thank you so much! i went to two different radioshacks today and i couldnt find what i wanted for that a/b box, (i got the project case) and some other stuff i needed there, (another thing that bums me out is that they only have the flux for circut work i strongly prefer the braided solder wire)but i was just about to get on here and ask where i could find some better parts.

Thanks for posting those pix, Rob. I couldn't get them to post, for some reason. My foot is in the pictures, for scale. 9.5 EEEE.
Yeah, I've added velcro strips across the two main boards. And rubber non-skid feet on bottom. It WILL be drastically different, soon. This board is my "Test Monkey". Once I have all of the layout, etc. done, I will build a "prettier" one. So far, it is strong, light (approx. 1.5 lbs.), and simple. 3 of my goals are met. It IS strong. But, I will have to use a 3rd., middle support, or slightly thicker wood to give it more durability. Still, it will be under 2 lbs. As far as simple.... I am toying with a few ideas. I am going to mount a power strip underneath. Then, I will use a 1Spot. Maybe 2 of the 1Spots for 18 volts on a couple of pedals. I was going to make a small carriage, for a DC Brick, or more likely, a Pedal Power 2. For now, it's the 1Spot. Mainly, because I already have one, and don't want to wait around! (Yes, I am cheap, AND impatient!). The design of the board is angled, so I have any of these options available. Everything underneath, clean, and tidy. Also, with the power supplies underneath, I keep the board small, with all of the surface area free for effects! See, there Is a madness to my method. I am toying with the idea of a couple of efx loops, built in, underneath. But, with a board this small, it may just be me wanting to overdo it, as opposed to actual usefulness. My friends have been giving me ideas for their ultimate boards. A couple I think are good: A small "gig light" to see the board easily in dark surroundings, (maybe an LED one that doesn't overly light up the WHOLE stage). And, an attachable sun shade type of thing, for outdoor/daylight use. It CAN be a bitch to see those little LEDs in the sunshine, sometimes. BUT.... simple is a goal. For me, anyway. Decisions, decisions. Okay, I gigged with the "Test Monkey" pedalboard last night. It worked great. Great size, and easy to use.
I may have to make it slightly taller, though. A power strip fits easily, but the 1Spot is a little taller than I made room for. Right now, I have it on the outside, with the excess cable bundled and velcroed underneath. That is NOT going to stay on the outside. I want this board to look as good as it works. I like the height, as it is right now. A Pedal Power 2, or DC Brick will fit easily. I have an idea for a small "cradle" to keep those types of power supplies securely attached underneath. I will also be testing that out. But for now, the project is to incorporate the 1Spot. I will take the board to work monday, and ask my friend to take some updated pix. I have a BITCHIN' logo for the front of this board. I will be using the "Test Monkey" logo on this, and any different designs, that I'm refining. I already have a friend who wants a larger board. I told him, that I have to get this one right, first. But, I have an idea that a larger board will only need extra cross braces to be sturdy enough. I think I can make a larger board that is reliable, and still quite light. Okay, another Dumba55 mistake. The 1Spot will fit easily. I just need a different AC power strip, with the plugs oriented perpendicular to the strip. Duh!
I've found a way to transfer my artwork to the front of the board. I think it will work beautifully. I just need to practice it a few more times. I am still toying with the best method for mounting the pedals to the board. I have a few variations on the tried and true methods, that are kicking around in my head. My last (I think!) puzzle/bugs to work out, are making sure the board is sturdy enough. It may need one more support, underneath, or just a slightly thicker top board. Also, I want better anti-slip "feet", or runners on the bottom. This is probably just a trip to Radio Shack away from being solved. Anyway, off to the shop...... Okay, I have 4 possibly GREAT ideas for mounting pedals! I am going ahead with the velcro for now. But, the new methods are all very promising. I will be testing them on the "Test Monkey" board(s).
The next board will have a hole on either side, for input, and output cables to stay to the sides. That way they won't be getting underfoot, and tangled on top of the board. As for the loops, I am not going to build them in. The Looper , and Japanese Apartment pedals are small, and just about perfect. Again, simple and light are goals. Rubber feet, or runners aren't as easy to find/make as I would have thought! I'll get it right, though. I may put a board, or cover on the bottom, for a neat, tidy look. Okay, I THINK I've got the ultimate non-skid idea for the bottom of the pedalboard. I will be testing that idea, this week/weekend.
