So im umming and arring about getting some bare knuckle pickups. I have a gibson 58 VOS. The pickups on the gibson are good but will the bare knuckle Stormy Mondays or Mules be better ? Is it a quality upgrade? I would have thought Gibsons attempt at their own pickup would be ideal but I have heard great things about the BKP.

I have a set of bareknuckles in my Warmoth "Franken-strat", and honestly, they're pretty good pickups. I would advise talking to Tim and just explaining to him what tone it is your after and he'll fill you in on the details. I told him I wanted something comparable to Rio Grande's BBQ bucker, something I could dial in QOTSA and ZZ Top into, thinking I'd get a vintage spec bucker set and he reffered me to his Geoff Whithorn set, which is pretty damned good. Sounds very "Thin Lizzy" to my ears, and that is a very good thing. He'll also wind them specifically for the guitar you're putting them in if you order direct from him, i.e. SG, Les Paul, 335, which is a really unique touch. I was, at first, a bit underwhelmed when I got them, but really, after playing them a while they definitely have their own mojo. Kinda like if Bogner made pickups.

a humbucking pickup is much better than the stock single coil pickup. An EMG is the best I have tried so far.

Uhhhhhhhh...... Thanks? Trust me, Eleos. Bare Knuckles are waaaaaaaaaay better than EMGs.

I would advise you to talk to Tim too. I did not before ordering am Emerald and a VHII and ended up with good pickups which were totally unfit for what I wanted. I was looking for more of that ZZ Top tone with some VH more modern crunch but I tried them a couple of times in my Les Paul and quickly reverted to the originalç pups.

The BK pups had a refined sound that really did not mesh well with my style.

Dude, that's EXACTLY the word I was looking for. Refined. Not a bad thing, not at all. I like having them in a "special" guitar so I can get a more refined and unique tone every now and again, and I like having a BBQ bucker in my SG just cause they rock. It's hard to really say what the ideal tone is, but I'm set on the BKP Whithorns in that guitar, which really was a huge experiment for the most part, and one that I think turned out well. Hollow Warmoth Strat with f-holes, Korina body and top, Wenge neck unfinished in a Gibson scale, Tonepros bridge. I'd definitely do it again.

A buddy of mine had the Warpig set in a guitar and they were probably the best high output pickups that I have ever heard. EMG's are the worst pickups I have ever used!!! Big Grin

Thanks for the advise guys! Smile

I just received an email from Tim and he recommended the Riff Raff for the bridge position and the Mule for the neck position. He didn't mention custom winding though. He also said he couldn't recommend that combo highly enough. So it looks like the way to go BUT why is buying direct from the site MUCH more expensive then through dealers ? Confused

Forgot to mention - should I go wax potted or not? Is there any tone advantage to not waxing ?

Unless you are after a very vintage-accurate tone, I don't see why not wax the pickups.
