Thee best guitar player out there today ... there is no one out there that plays and feels the music like he does .... creating soundscapes like hendrix and eno and improving like Zappa and Garcia .... truely a fresh sound in today's junk that's out there ... he has influanced many of today's " Jamband guitarists " creating a new high about playing guitar and creating new fresh music...... unlike the shit you hear on the Radio today .... keep it real....Trey is Rock / Improv music today in the 00's and pushing the envelope to the max..... my .02 and after 124 Phish shows Iam most convinced....

Phish's spiraling jams are cool but boring. Just four guys wanking for four hours. Give me the Allmans. I love hippies that drive BMW's so I go to lots of Phish shows to keep it real.

Trey's playing is great but most of the songs are cheesey and ALL of the vocals are.
I just don't get their sense of humor. But Trey is an incredible musician.

I was into the whole Dead/Phish/Panic scene for awhile back in the early 90s - Trey is a good player, no question, and the times I have seen him play his tone was really happening...BUT, Phish is totally overrated! I mean they're all excellent musicians but they don't SAY anything with their talent (IMHO). They are in a position to reach tens of thousands of people and make a positive contribution but their lyrics and songs are just silly, vapid shit that doesn't really mean anything (to me). I love their covers (Frankenstein by Edgar Winter Group is totally badass) but what's with all the goofiness? Maybe I'm missing the point?

I think their music is more about having fun than curing cancer or nuclear war.... It's all about forgetting about that shit and just grooving...

Yeah, good point - I'm usually drawn to more intense stuff musically, would like to just forget about that shit though... Smile I think the people I admire most combine a great groove with conscious awareness and positivity, like Marley, Santana, James Brown, Hendrix, Curtis Mayfield, etc. Anyway, just my $.02, all that counts is whatever works for each of us

I had a phish CD. It was great for insomnia. The production quality is intriguing...kinda like a warm rainy day. But the aimlessness of the songs leaves me feeling unproductive and like I've wasted lots of time trying to get into the music for nothing.

everyone here who says they don't like phish or maybe too goofy you need to go rent or buy their movie Bittersweet Motel, if you watch that and still don't like them then we would be on 2 totally different levels and personally would have to question your intelligence.kidding

I am really surprised that any "musician" would view Phish''s music as "pointless or aimless". Are you kidding me? Just because Phish doesn't write around 4 bar choruses & everything isn't wrapped up in a neat little package, doesn't mean it is ......meaningless. IMO Phish actually is tongue & cheek about alot of thier songs. I mean who wants to hear people bitch & complain album after album. It is somewhat ironic that i say this because my favorite all-time band is Pink Floyd.......enough said, anyway, Trey is "very original" without a doubt. His shit is incredibly hard to play & he is able to bring other musicians together to make, more likely then not, the greatest improv on the planet right now. I actualyl feel like Phish is almost just singing lyrics to entertain the "non-musician" fanbase. Don't you "musicians" agree that if the playing is at a high enough level, that lyrics are not even necessary, nevermind needing to be "important"? Anyway people, open your eyes, Trey is the most original, talented breath of fresh air that has come along for years. If you wanna hear some amazing "super-intense" musicianship from every instrument then listen to Phish. If you wanna hear "hook-choruses" & "deep" lyrics, listen to Pearl Jam or Alice In Chains, (both of whom i like very much), but....the reality is that the combined talents of McCreedy & Cantrell don't even begin to approach what Trey is doing on the guitar right now. Wake Up!! Go listen to Junta or A Live One then just be honest with yourself.

Thanks gareth, this thread really needed that. Sometimes not understanding lyrics, and thinking that they make no sense, is just ignorant judgment. I know some great songs that have some simple seemingly nonsense lyrics, but in the end the real meaning is above the actual words. This is in comparison to the music which creats it's own complex web that you have to really listen into to get it. Some things aren't just there for you to bite into.

I have listned to Junta and Rift as well as some of the live recordings. I have to say that there are not any dynamics to thier jams. It's just wanking for the sake of wanking. Don't give me that 'take it to another level' shit. If I want to see and hear musicians play music that only showcases the musicianship/chops, I'll listen to that mid '70s fusion garbage. Yes, they are very tongue and cheek, and they can obviously play, but I think they get far too much credit for what they deserve. Also, I think you mentioning that the lyrics do not matter shows that you are just another fucking music snob.

I have to agree with Sushi. I don't like Phish at all, but I don't knock the people who do.
I'll bet if Phish scored a string of top 40 hits all the snobs would turn on them like rabid dogs!!

I love the band's music, but Trey Anastasio is NOT a great guitar player. He is sooooo sloppy! Maybe he should pull less tubes back stage or something because when he plays live he makes 100's of UGLY mistakes everytime. Sometimes it's painful to hear him! He has brilliant ideas and an incredible arsenal, but he's just not a good player. If you asked him if he thinks he's one of the greatest he'd probably laugh. He's not in the same league as Garcia, SRV, Jimmy Herring, Scofield, Santana or any of the other gutarists I would call "great" or "hot". And he doen't give a damn either. [Eek!]

Oh, where to begin. Don't be assholes fellas. Trey is one of the greatest, but not the best. He can play lines that Hendrix couldn't play, but Hendrix could do things that Trey couldn't do. That goes with every other musician. Trey found and created his unique sound. He is a master, but he does a lot of cocaine and fucks his playing up along with giving himself an edge. Of all the bad shows I've heard him play, Garcia had worst (looks like heroine Gene!). Another point, the lyrics are not stupid or silly. That is Tom Marshall's voice, he's created his own descriptive world. If you don't like 'em, then fuck off because I doubt that you can do better. What if you wrote the lyrics for a huge band and there was these idiots completely tearing you apart out of their own insecurities. And you people who say Phish is the greatest band ever, go to hell! They are not (I think they've reached a level that most all others have not), but you cannot say that about anyone because everyone offers something that another cannot...that's one of the beautiful things about humans. Oh, and by the way, Trey is not the only member of Phish who is good. Has anyone ever listened closely to Fishman's playing and all the complex polyrhythmic shit he does? What about Gordon's Bass lines on It's Ice and Mound off of Rift (my favorite Phish album)? What about Page's consistent amazing clasical/jazz influenced piano/organ/synth playing? Trey just steals the spotlight more (and he's a control freak which annoys the hell out of me). They are all good, but not the best. Together they rip though. But, ok, they're not perfect and they get sloppy from time to time. So do you. So in the end, don't bite the hand that feeds you great music whether you realize it or not. And don't call any of them gods, cause they are not.
