I can't believe no one mentioned Larry Carlton anybody who's heard Steely Dan's Kid Charlemagne solo has to agree he's amazing. And what about Allan Holdsworth the guy is from another planet even EVH has said he's the best he's ever seen.

Absolutely ... can we pick 11 instead ? How about Jeff Baxters' solos on 'My old school' and 'Rikki Don't Lose That Number' .

No particular order although I tend to pickup SRV, Jimi, or EC before anyone:

1. SRV (I saw him on ACL in '83 while watching in great Saturday night tradition w/mom and dad. He's the reason I picked up guitar).

3. Eric Clapton
4. (tie with nod to FK) Freddie/Albert/BB King
5. Eric Johnson
6. Johnny Winter
7. Chet Atkins (c'mon, he's amazing and he lived down the road from here as kid).
8. Slash
9. Jimmy Page
10. Pete Townshend/Jimmie Vaughan

I think the Edge was given the nickname...
as for your opinions, you are entitled to them but it seems like you contradict yourself in your tirades. You complain about
sloppy playing but a guy like Steve Vai is
all about precision. Why do you hate him?

Robert Quine
Sonny Sharrock
James Burton
Tom Verlaine
Hubert Sumlin
Jim Hall
Clarence White
Bill Frisell
Steve Cropper
Jeff Beck
Jimi Hendrix
Mick Taylor/Keef (it's them playing off each other that kills me.)
All of these guys have caused me to wear out tape and cd players and finally buy a looping sampler to figure out whats going on. To say nothing of the fact that the music that they have made has increased the quality of my life.

Not that I have much to add but maybe one other important influence who recently lost his title as the artist with the best selling live album and lost it to the performer that sold more records than Elvis. Not to say that Garth doesn't deserve his due. See #11 on my list if you don't know who I mean.

#1) Clapton
#2) Hendrix
#3) SRV
#4) Page
#5) Duane Allman
#6) Johnny Winter
#7) Mick Taylor
#8) Peter Green
#9) Carlos Santana
#10) George Harrison
*** SORRY CAN'T STOP YET***
#11) Peter Frampton
#12) Jeff Beck
#13) Leslie West

Ranking guitar players is a pasttime best suited to 14-year-olds. First of all, as Bartok said, "competitions are for horses, not musicians." Secondly, you all rank the same 10-15 guitar players over and over. You folks really need some new records, err, CDs. Ever heard of Doc Watson, Richard Thompson, Merle Travis, Clarence White, Martin Carthy, Blind Blake--just to name a few?

Didn't think so...

I think the idea is that some person with a guitar at some point has spun all our ears in such a way as to make us run for the woodshed and practice. Or maybe I'm just speaking for me. I'd like to add

Oscar Aleman
Django
Charlie Christian

Just cause I love to listen to them; some one else can figure out good, better, best.
