I know that this guy gets a lot of stick, he's not the fastest shredder around but he never tried to be. It’s been so long since we had a true guitar innovator. People say that SRV was the last great guitar god, and maybe he was, don’t get me wrong I love SRV's music but was he doing anthything that was truly original?? I don’t know, but sure the guy was amazing. Anyway back to morello, I think his playing is great he makes the most of the effects he has and his riffs are always top notch, he never overplays a song and I would consider him to be coming pretty close to an "innovator" (man im gonna get slated for that). They guy as produced some really cary sounds and solo's (know your enemy, killing in the name) he's not thinking "how fast can i play these notes" but he's working with the song to get whats best. At the time of RATM's first album (imho all 4 are excellent) I would say that they were a very unique band and nothing has been heard quite like it since, there are plenty of Rap/rock/metal rip off groups about now days but rage were at the forefront. Modern guitar music is waaaaaaaaaaay overdue a new guitar innovator/guitar god, but the guitar has been around for so long, is there anything new to do with it? Someone needs to prove that there is.
I admire the way he puts the songs before his ego as well. However, I do feel that he's been presented as leading guitar figure solely based on his ability to manipulate effects and a total lack of talented mainstream players.

I won't call him a milestone player like EVH or Hendrix, but he sure is one of the closest to that type of player to come around in the last 10 years.
I think you miss the point mediocre, it doesn't matter if he's manipulating effects or not. I guess we shouldn't play with distortion either cuz that would be cheating. I hate when people try to cheapen Morello by mentioning effects or saying he just does "tricks".

Actually, I'm not missing the point at all. I hate it when people who like something you don't claim that you just don't "get it". If you want the truth. He's an incredibly average guitar player. Sorry.

I really like Morello. He is a very unique player with good taste for both rhythm and lead work. I really enjoy watching him play. Morello is the person that inspired me to play guitar and I will always respect and admire him.
Enjoy playing music

imho, that guy is the worst sort of hypocritical ass-clown. he's making tons of money running around in his silly chairman mao outfit, spewing vitriolic nonsensical anal-cheese slop about the u.s.a. at every opportunity. oh yeah, and his guitar playing is uninspiring to say the least. allright, drop your book of hegelian dialectics, pull up your red socks and flame away. randy

The Morello work you've heard has been simpler than what he can play because it fits the style of music of the bands you've heard. He can shred like a mofo, but it wouldn't sound right in a RATM song, so he doesn't do it. So, yeah, you're wrong.

Well, I do think it's cool that he explores the sounds of the guitar in order to innovate however, the way people talk about him like he's some sort of turning point musician for the guitar or a new guitar hero is pretty silly. Incidentally, I wouldn't be particurlarly impressed with him even if he could shred, but I think it's cute that you would call some one else's opinion "wrong". Good for you, lil' buddy.
