Anybody else have this CD?

I can't stop listening to it. He plays clean. He plays dirty. He plays slow, and fast. He uses chords like nobody I've heard.

OK, somebody out there is gonna say, "Oh, yeah, he ain't squat compared to 'Johnny
B'" (or whoever), but this is the first guitar CD I haven't gotten tired of in 3 listens since I wore out the grooves of my Johnny Winter And Live album so long ago.

He's not a rocker, not really blues, not a shredder or an SRV clone. Sorta country in places, then bluesy. Then jazzy, but not jazz.

The CD is all instrumental. Melodic as hell. Can't wait for the next one. I'll even pay for it this time.

I saw Johnny A last month he opened up for Jimmie Vaughan. He did an incredible performance. I think he is probably one of the best players out now. He fuses rock, blues, jazz, rockabilly, surf, etc.and his songs have a timeless quality about them. He also has great tone to boot. Custom shop Les Paul with Bigsby tremolo bridge and two Marshall combo tube amps. Very effective.

Saw him about a month ago. Tastiest use of a trem arm I've ever heard or seen. For those of you that haven't heard him, it's worth the effort.

Well I heard the cover of "Wichita Lineman" recently on college radio. I didn't catch the artist's name and have been wondering ever since... I thought it sounded amazing. I'll definitely get this record. Cool, glad you brought it up.

IMO, Johnny A is the best guitarist today! Got the cd and am amazed, even after 15 listens. Timeless is a great word for it!

What the hell is all the hype over Johhny A?!!! I bought his cd because everyone on here was talking so good about him I thought I would check him out (since I don't believe in downloading music for free) and I was so damn disappointed. He is not "innovative", "exciting", "breaking new ground" or anything. He is not doing anything new that Neal Schon or Al Di Meola didn't do before him. Just because Vai signed him to his label does not make him "great". Vai hasn't done anything worth while since Fire Garden. Now he is just a parody of himself.
Granted Johhny A has technique but the fact that he doesn't play standard "rock" chords does not make him special. Players like Schon and Randy Rhoads were doing this years ago. And his goddamn tone? It's horrible! Too processed. Listen to "Beyond the Thunder' by Schon if you want to hear great tone and melodies.
It's amazing that we listen to what other people say and if they (Vai) give their stamp of approval then it MUST be good. Give me a break!!! I have to go to bed now. I have to get up early and return Johhny A to where he belongs....the discount bin at Tower Records. [Mad]

Everone has their own opinion. I bought the CD first after hearing a cut on the radio. It kinda reminded me of Danny Gatton in a way. So,I wound up going to see him live at a coffee shop. Small place and crowd, but everyone was amazed at his playing. I checked out the pedals and was suprised to see mostly Boss effects! No boutique pedals. And if I remember right he used a Crybaby. He used two small Marshalls. I read that when he recorded the album he was going to use some vintage amps, but he ran the Marshalls direct because he said it sounded better. I don't think it sounds over-produced, just nice clear tone. Not sterile at all. Just my opinion.

One man's junk is another man's treasure. I concur with the general opinion of the group - the album is fantastic and the playing is great. And I love the guitar tone - I don't think it sounds "processed" at all. And I didn't even know he was on Vai's record label! Smile

no, his mind is not for rent...
