Yes that's right. I'm sure you are sooooo much better. Kurt wrote some really great melodies and riffs. Not to mention he was a great songwriter as well. But...I'm sure you're soooo much better. I think your spandex is a little too tight.

They bitch and moan because they don't know what the record business is like until they are there, and when they do they are under CONTRACT OBLIGATIONS. Have you ever known anyone who was depressed? I don't think so, because if you did you would not trivialize the situation. Yes I agree he should have got help, but he didn't and that is tragic, especially for his daughter. Let me ask you this; Ernest Hemingway was an alcoholic, so does that negate all of his writing ability? Elton John is homosexual, Does that mean he is not a great songwriter? Jimi Hendrix smoked dope, does that mean he wasn't a great musician. See, spandex boy, the point I am trying to make is that the focus of this thread is discussing the persons playing and contibutions to music, not personal life. It is with your biased attitude that you will never make out of the bedroom. As far as being dead, well you might as well be in the music world, because the rest of the world does not and will not ever notice you exist, bedroom guitarist.

spandex boy! ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!! I know plenty of people who are depressed, they happen to be intelligent enough to go get help.as far as getting out of the bedroom, now I'm really ROTFLMFAO!!!!! I happen to play every night for my job, and I make well over 60k a year doing so. ever watch austin city limits? been there? I have. ever heard of Natalie Merchant? worked with her and recorded with her also. Oh lets see, I've also backed up Eddie Money, duke robillard, and even played with danny gatton years ago,I left my bedroom when I was about 16,I will no longer respond to your posts as I wish to only communicate with people who have some degree of dignity and intelligence.and worshiping these fucking loser druggies shows you are an idiot.
I thought that this thread was titled best guitarist. Kurt Cobain was not a good guitar player! PERIOD! Pete Townsend, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, all wrote cool songs but they are by no means great guitarists. Stick with the topic!

Wow, you really worked with some great people! Eddie Money, Natalie Merchant! Man you make over 60K a year! Wow can I touch you?! You say I am a loser because I "worship these fucking loser druggies". I never said I worshipped Cobain, I stated that he wrote some great melodies and riffs and was a great songwriter. Okay Mr Wonderful Guitar Slinger, at least Cobain had the talent and ability to FRONT one of the '90s best bands. You on the other hand are a SIDEMAN for hasbeens and PBS programming. You've worked with these people, that could mean you got them coffee. lol!! Yes I'm an idiot because I like druggies. I as well as many others think Hendrix (who was also into drugs FYI) was a great guitarist so I guess we are all idiots. Oh BTW your famed playing partner from years ago, Danny Gatton, killed himself as a result from depression AND drug abuse, you idiot!!! According to your mindset, everyone should be listening to nice drug free 'Good 'Ol Boys'. I have a tip for you; why don't you take your narrow minded opinions and shove them straight up your ass, (that is if Billy Graham isn't still up there) you small minded egotistical (guitar slinger, please!!) conservative.
alright this is my first visit ever to the site, since im lookin into gettin a guiter, and i went to this forum first, saw this post, and saw the list, and a saw cobains name and was like wtf, he wasn't a good guitar player at all! I LOVE Nirvana, and Cobain, they are so awesome, I got all there cd's and all, etc etc, but he wasn't a good guitar player. Not that he didn't play a lot, or practice, cause his mom said he used to play every day etc etc. But he was no Jimi Hendrix by any means Peanut, you sound like a real IDIOT . Seriously. And why hasn't Zakk Wylde been mentioned yet? Well he might have been mentioned if it weren't for this little "debate"

Zakk Wylde is nothing spectactular. His bands suck and the material with Ozzy is horrible. He is also an asshole to boot.

Well, i personally strongly disagree. But thats your opinion, not mine, so its cool . I just really like him. And I have actually heard he is a nice guy, not an asshole, but can't totally back that up. I thought it was pretty nice of him to show up at Ozzy's birthday party. He didn't have to fly out there to do that, but he did.
This forum, "Best Guitarists", is designed to create debate. Best is always a matter of opinion and taste. Every one of these guitarists that were mentioned have different levels of abilities but they have all reached a plane most of us will never see. They all deserve the title of great but best? My musical tastes are forever changing and whatever I'm into at the moment is what I think is best. Can I respect a person because they are a drug addict? No, but I can respect them for their level of achievement, absolutely. I'm not going to get emotional because what you think is best is different from what I think is best. And I am conservative.
Tony Mcalpine y. malmsteem Steve Vai Joe satriani John Petrucci Robin Trower Jeff Beck These are guitarists not just guys that play guitar in a band. Movers and Shakers!! Nuff said
Kurt Cobain I saw on the top of the list. The guy might have not had the chops of Van Halen but he single handley changed the entire landscape of music in the early 90s. If your not a fan of Nirvana atleast listen to unplugged CD. Kurt Cobain was one if the great songwriters to come threw in many many years. Not since Davies, Townshend, Dylan and Lennon etc had there been a writter with substance. Serious those acoustic songs will stack up against anything. Penny Royal Tea etc just awesome powerful and chilling.
Maybe not Van Halen but his guitar playing changed the entire music industry and the world in the 90s.
Yeah he turned to Coke and Heroin late in his life but arent we being a tad judgemental. No one...I mean no one here knows are ever know what it feels like to wake up and have 200 million people worldwide want to touch you, talk to you, hang out with you....ever come home and have kids by the dozens sitting on your front lawn? Was he a loser I think not. The Kurt I knew was tiried ill prepared for fame. Is this a crime is this the reason to call him a retard or loser?
10 yrs ago almost we lost one of the great songwritters of the 20th century. Think not.... In 2018 when you hear Smells Like Teen Spirit on the radio you can grin and think of all the new kids who are still buying all his music and finding his real depth as an artist and musician.....
There is a lot more to being a great guitar player than just pull offs and hammer ons and licks.....
Well said Toyz. We really have to ask ourselves, what defines a great guitarist? In the end it's not about chops or flash. Any 15 year old kid can have these things. It's really what moves people and changes the way things are. In 1991, hair metal was still out there, then along comes Nirvana. Guitar playing was focused on the song not as an exuse for some guitar player to go weedly-weedly-wee. No he didn't have the chops of Vai, Van Halen, or Satriani. He did however, create great melodic guitar lines that make the others seem generic in comparison. As far as the drugs go; Kurt was depressed and he used anything that made him feel better, or at least what seemed like it. That's not an exuse I know, but many people can't live with it being anonymous, let alone being the center of attention for millions of people.

In early 90s we had a store and I thought I was a really good guitar player. We used to have 16 yr old kids that would come in sit down and do sweeping appegios, and all the stuff like they where playing a video game.
I got really bummed.....and thought what does it matter anyway....
Anyway one day one of these kids comes in and his friend put on a drum machine and I asked him if he wanted to jam to some 1 4 5.....he could play a blues ryhthm or stay in time for shit....
