If you have read my post in the worst guitarist category, here is my best list.Note I am basing it on the same requirements as my worst listing:
INFLUENCE(players that make you want to play in the first place)
TONE and ORIGINALITY(things that make that player stick out)
COMMAND(those that single handedly create a style of their own)
So here goes:
1.JIMI HENDRIX(way ahead of his time)
2.EDDIE VAN HALEN(true revolutionary)
3.JIMMY PAGE(the most influential Brit, even over Clapton and Beck)
4.YNGWIE MALMSTEEN(the undisputed king of neoclassical, beats out Blackmore and Rhoads and all the Shrapnel spawn.)
5.ZAKK WYLDE/SLASH/JOE PERRY.To close to call.Best balls in the pentatonic category bar none.
6.VITO BRATTA/JAKE E. LEE/NUNO BETTENCOURT/PAUL GILBERT.Best of the "L.A."style.
7.STEVE VAI/JOE SATRIANI.
8.DUANE ALLMAN/DICKEY BETTS.The only Southern rock forunners.
9.STEVIE RAY VAUGHN.Best blues period.Beats Winter,Moore,Mack,King on tone alone.
10.JERRY CANTRELL/KURT COBAIN.Leaders of the overrated Seattle scene.Lucky to make the list.
11.ALLAN HOLDSWORTH.Impossible to duplicate.Edges out Morse,Dimeola,Carlton and Pass for best Jazz/Fusion.
OOPS! One too far.Any good new players out there?NO!As a matter of fact guitar music is dying a slow death up against all this hip hop crap these days.Metallica better get a new album out soon or its game over.Just a last note to the idiots that don't like my worst list and the fact that I use my email as a name on this post;at least I have the balls to say what I say and stand by it too.BTW KIP WINGER was a member of one of the worst 80s bands ever

Yes that's right. I'm sure you are sooooo much better. Kurt wrote some really great melodies and riffs. Not to mention he was a great songwriter as well. But...I'm sure you're soooo much better. I think your spandex is a little too tight.
What? Kurt Cobaine a guitar player? No f@cking way! What a f@cking loser! That Nirvana is garbage (MTV)kid stuff! I'm with "Slinger" on this one, and have every reason to belive he is better!

I like these criteria!!

I'd like to add Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine); I mean great tone, and how many guitar players tuned their guitars so that it's in tune when the whammy bar is fully *detuned*? The guitar sounds on the MBV albums are truly original.

Also, Curtis Mayfield. He's one of maybe five guys I've read as having been Jimi's 'favorite guitar player' and a big influence. His tastefulness and restraint are probably harder to master than Yngwie Malmsteen style guitar histrionics.

William Reid. Jesus and Mary Chain. You can teach a beginner his parts, but how many albums are really as balls out as the feedback maelstrom of Psychocandy? And, as opposed to Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, or bands like Bardo Pond, he wrote great, classically rock/pop songs.

Bo Diddley: I'm sure most will disagree, but those tones were great and it often sounds like he's using about 5 boutique stomp boxes, which, we all know, he wasn't.

I'm stealing time from work right now, so that's all my brain's spitting out right now.
