OK, I know it's not possible, but I sincerely feel that an unknown(to most) guitarist takes the title.
His name is Guthrie Govan.
I am not saying he's the greatest because he is a technician. But he is just about the fastest guitarist, master of just about any style you can imagine, has a completely unique sound, can gel with any style band, can spew tons of feel right through his fingers, and an all around nice guy with NO ego.
He only has a few things out on CD, but it would blow even the most experienced guitarists mind.
I spent 4 years at Berklee(Boston), two years at GIT and 1 1/2 years at Juilliard.
And in all my 25 years of playing, I have never seen a man that has such control and command of his instrument. Just mind numbing talent.
I have a huge library of influences and favorites from Metal, blues, jazz, counrty, rock, funk, etc etc etc etc etc.
I listen to just about every style out there for bettering myself as a guitarist. From Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Chet Atkins, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse, Wes Montgomery, Ry Cooder, Albert Lee, Joe Satriani, Scott Henderson,Dan Huff, Mike Landau, Adrian Belew, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray, Hendrix, and the list goes on and on and on and on.
This guy takes the cake.
If you ever get the chance to see him live, or buy his CD's....Just do it. You will only be a better person and player for it.
I have hung out with him a few times at shows, and he's the most humble, nice, and funny guy I ever had the honor to meet.
This guy should be on the front page of every guitar magazine in the world.

Pat Martino just use to use the "min'd" pick - as in mined from the earth, it was agate. I remember those ads ... "so and so challenges you to beat the fastest guitarist on earth". Fucking stupid! Martino on the other hand is an absolute phenom. If you've never heard him and you like jazz he is definitely one of the "cats". Plenty of CD's available.

Well just so you know, I have everything that Pat Martino ever recorded. Both prior to his stroke and after.
I love Pat's playing, but he couldn't tie Guthries shoes on his best day.
I'm not talking about speed either. Because if I was, I'd be talking about Shawn Lane or Michael Angelo, which Guthrie is much faster than.
Trust me.

GREG HOWE--the greatest combination of technique, compositional chops, groove, and feel; all he lacks is a truly distinctive tone.

"The red bells beckon you to ride/A hand print on the driver's side/It looks a lot like engine oil/And tastes like being poor and small/And Popsicles in summer" Neko Case--"Deep Red Bells"

Right, & that pretty much sums it up in my book. The "greatest guitarist" is the one who most touches the nerve of the individual listener. To assign a title of greatest, you must determine which listener has the greatest taste & the greatest range of emotion, which is of course simply not possible. Music is not an athletic event; greatness can not be measured in statistics, as in home runs, RBI's, free throw percentage, touchdowns, or goals. Even in the realm of sports, where things are a bit more cut & dry, it's still a hypothetical proposition at best - we'll never know whether Marciano or Ali would have been victorious in the ring. Trying to determine the greatest guitarist is no less futile than trying to determine whether Picasso, Michelangelo, or DaVinci was the greatest artist. Or whether cheeseburgers are greater than pizza. For some folks the greatest guitarist will be Albert King or Hendrix, for others Lenny Breau or Joe Pass, some would say Segovia, others would choose Johnny Marr or Mike Campbell or George Harrison, others will like Shawn Lane or Guthrie Govan. It entirely depends on what stirs the soul & tweaks the ear of the listener, & that can not be measured or gauged in any scientific way known to me. I do however understand the spirit of your post, acknowledge that you most likely did not set out to debate semantics, & I am more than curious to hear Mr. Govan. It's just that, for me, the only realistic definition of the word "greatest" is most often "favorite". $.02

Just so you can comprehend, I'll break it down for you in laymans terms.
I listened to all the tracks on that site.
The playing was terrible at best, which includes the drumming, and noises.
I'm not being mean, just pointing out the blatantly obvious.
I have been playing guitar for over 24 years and have listened to just about every style of music in existance. That includes obscure, eclectic, unique, experimental, and everything in between.
Those songs sounded like some little kid just took a 4 track recorder and made a bunch of noise.
I completely appreciate any style of music and always have a tremendously open mind(even if it's Rap)but I found no substance, musicality,or creativeness in any one of those songs.
Sorry if that offends you. I'm just speaking the truth.
