as i type i'm listening to "hate to say i told you so" and it seems to me the hives have really distilled 60's garage and 70's punk. no guitar solos, but killer riffs that keef richard would approve of, fer sure. are they a flash in the pan? who knows-i'm just enjoying the manic thrill while it lasts.
same goes for fu manchu & and queens of the stone age (winners:stoner rock division). sure, none of these bands is groundbreaking, but along with the strokes, and rocket from the crypt , maybe it'll be ok to just RAWK OUT without fretting whether it means anything important or revolutionary.
plus, none of them use a dj or 7 string guitars-that's gotta count for something as we wave goodbye to fred durst as he heads back to his job at arby's.....

Weird timing - I had almost this exact conversation with a bandmate before our gig last night. It's refreshing as hell that kids are actually listening to bands that embrace the Kinks / Stooges / etc. lineage. Much better for their (and our) ears / souls / psyches than the stuff with the cookie monster vocals, IMHO.

Stratoplaster, you're dead wrong... While the Hives and Fu Manchu play music that's very similar to an old style, QOTSA use old music as a springboard and create some of the most original music out there today... They're my favorite band for a reason... I could never get tired of them...

DEAD wrong? in regard to what, dave? if you wanna take issue with what i posted, fine. but what exactly do you have a beef with me about? the hives? or...?

i'm guessing that you were never on the debate team in high school. otherwise, you'd easily surmise that your post makes little or no sense at all. aside from gainsaying what i'd written, that is.

i take on all comers, but if you got no game, better stay at home and argue with the mirror.

p.s.-yes, QotSA rock, but they are just as derivative as any "rock" band on the planet.

If you're gonna be truly rude, so be it... I can play that game, too... It should've been very obvious what I was saying... While the sound of the Hives and Fu Manchu can essentially be summed up by comparing them with one or two bands from the past, it's MUCH harder to pigeonhole QOTSA in that way... And if you think that "Song for the Deaf," "Song for the Dead," and "Sky is Falling" off the new record are unoriginal, I'd like to hear what classic sound they ripped off for those tracks... I'll be honest and say that some of the Nick Oliveri-sung tracks are rather "garagey..." To me, "Another Love Song" just screams a coked-up, amped-out Elvis Costello... But as for most of the band's tracks, they're really heading in new directions... So maybe I shouldn't have said "dead wrong..." But, I take offense when somebody refers to my favorite band on the planet as just rehashing old sounds... There's so much to QOTSA, it's absolutely ridiculous... If you haven't picked up the s/t album and "Rated R," do yourself a favor... Go out and buy them the second you read this... Two of the finest records of the last ten years...
