What ever happened to Frank Marino? He was with a group back in the 70's called Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush.He liked to play a lot like Hendrix except he liked to use a lot more feedback than even Jimi would use.

There's a blues guy out of New Orleans named Bryan Lee that came out with to live blues CDs a couple years ago. They feature Frank Marino and Kenny Wayne Sheppard as guests. I had never heard of Frank, but he and Kenny really light it up on those CDs.

Ya know, the Hendrix comparisions are so unfair to Frank. When Frank started in the early 70's he admittedly said that yes, he dug Hendrix but he was into the Beatles and the Doors to name a few others. I guess where he got cornered was his first couple of records (keep in mind he was 17 years old) and yes, they were kinda spacey with a dreamy quality to them so the Hendrix thing stuck. But honestly, after 74' Frank didn't sound anything like Hendrix. Frank has a great deal of talent up his sleeves and to be saddled with "Hendrix copy" for his career really hurt him. He was a far more aggressive player than Hendrix and quite a bit faster but his writing had some great depth to it.
Am I going to say he was better than Hendrix? No...but I'm not going to say that he was worse either. I personally LOVE Frank and I dig Hendrix a great deal too. But for those of you who have never heard Frank before you should really do yourself a favor and go get the 78' "Live" CD and then you'll see where Frank was coming at during his peak. He is a ferocious player and his songs are outstanding in my opinion. It's a great injustice to this talented man to say he's nothing but a knockoff. This is like saying James Hetfield is nothing but a Tony Iommi clone. Are they similiar in style and riffs? To a point yes but a clone? No...James has risen out of that shadow of influence and speaks for himself. James and Tony are both intersting players yet completely different players. Same with Jimi and Frank.
Give him a chance...you'll see what I'm talking about. Nobody (and I mean NOBODY) touches "Johnny B. Goode" like Marino. It's on the "Live" album.
BTW, Marino guested with some other guys from the 70's (Pat Travers, Leslie West, etc.) about 5 years ago on 2 tribute recordings. One was called "Hats Off to SRV" and the other was called "Tribute to A. King" and these guys all did SRV and Albert King songs for the the tributes. Frank smoked on these...they're worth seeking out.
was a great one by frank also, another friend of mine, talked to him about a year ago.he said hes been in a on going battle with a record companys they got his old and new stuff held up,like greatest hits,he also has another album ready to come out.but guess what? yup! f'n record companyyou know what i say, fuck the big boys were the ones with the music.did you know out of every record/c.d. sold the artist only gets 6 to 9%and only the big boys get the later thats 6to 9 cents out of a dollar. you can do it your selfs if you can get a few p1 p2 radio stations playing your stuff, do the reserch.independent is the way to go.
I seen Frank Marino live in 1978 opening for Thin Lizzy. He had an amazing sound.Killer wah player.I got his album "Tales of the Unexpected" which had a cover of "All along the Watchtower".The guy can play.

Yeah, I think I wore out a copy or two of Franks live album. "Door of Elusion" and "Electric Reflections of War" were classics. Haven't heard any thing about Him and I was wondering about Him just a couple of days ago. Gee, I don't even remember if "Door of Elusion" was on the live album.
