One of those rare cats that puts the whole package together - writing, playing, and singing. That whole Celtic meets Rock via a Strat thing knocks me out, especially the open string drone stuff. The only Thompson I have currently is "Mirror Blue", and a wacked solo on one track on a Maria McKee record. A bassist/guitarist that I work with is a Thompson lunatic, and I've liked everything he's turned me on to. He rates his favorite players like this:

1.) Richard Thompson
2.) Jeff Beck
3.) Buddy Miller

Well I personally couldn't come up with a pecking order like that, it constantly changes. But I value this guy's opinion highly, and that's high praise indeed! This same guy went to a solo Thompson acoustic show, and said that he played the entire show in the key of D; There's one way to find the comfort zone on the instrument...

DonneR, if I were going to buy one Richard Thompson record, which would you recommend?

Yeah I really like Storytelling electric guitar players, Mark Knopfler and Bruce ****burn are right up there as well---- I think you have to have pretty big ears for Thompson though as he really bounces around, and that throws alot of people--- I think they should just lock him in a studio somewhere and let him get all that out.............Ive seen him three times, and hes one of those rare people that I stood there 5 feet from him watching him amazed, and going " what the hell is he playing" I liked the one with 52 vincent--or he has a huge double cd in retospect that covers every thing---- He also did a couple albums as a sideman for Loudon Wainwright that are 'unique' /....

Yeah, I think I'll snag that double CD. Agreed that Thompson isn't gonna be everybody's cup o' tea, but I sure dig it.
