I was trying to break down the solo to Dolemite by ear off Tore Down House today and was just wondering what scales Scott Henderson uses in his blues playing? I know he uses major and minor pentatonic and the blues scale, but it sounds like some of his stuff has outside notes. If anyone knows what scales he uses on the blues CDs, please let me know. Im kind of interested in learning some new stuff because as much as I like playing in the style of SRV and KWS I'd like to have more options then just being stuck within a pentatonic box. Any info on this would be appriacted, I'd like to know what he is doing though so I can spice up my lead playing a bit. Thanks

Hey RW, You are so right, wait till you see him live!! Youch!! he goes way way out there. Anyhow, yes he is going out on that tune especially over the 5 chord. I absolutely love it but I never figured out what the hell he is doing in that solo. Let me know if you figure it out, or drop him an E-mail. http://www.scotthenderson.net/ Good Luck MH

Hey dude, I've been to that site a billion times and never caught his email address? I see his tour company's email address and I see his web site creators email address. What is his address? I love his tone and technique a lot. Does he usually play at places that allow minors as well? I guess hes not doing a States tour until fall! I've got like the first 2 chorus of the Dolemite solo transcribed, but then he goes nuts! I think its time for me to buy a slow-down machine!!

Sorry my bad, I thought that site had an E-mail address. I'm not sure how you can get in touch with him. I saw him in NYC last year at The Bottom Line, it was the second show on a Wednesday and there were about 50 people there. It was incredible; Scott is one of my favorites. You must get Tribal Tech’s “Thick” album it is really great, very loose and some unbelievable solos. I’m not sure what types of clubs he plays when he tours but I will be there is he is within an 80-mile range of me. Can’t you get one of his transcribed books from the website? MH

Hey, I dont really dig Tribal Tech from what I have heard, I have just now started to appriciate jazz and fusion and want to pick up a little of that stuff, but Tribal Tech seemed a little too crazy for me. I havent heard Thick though. I mostly just like Henderson's blues CD's, but maybe I should give Thick a chance. Have you seen his instructional videos? What do they teach if so? You can order Tribal Tech books off the site, but thats about it. Actually, Im kind of enjoying transcribing Dolemite's solo myself by ear. I think I will probably reach a point where it will be to above my head to transcribe though!!

I had the pleasure of studying at the Musicians Institute back in the 80's when Scott was a teacher there(I don't know if he still is)and one thing he ALWAYS stressed in regards to soloing was the use of "chromatic imbellishments" or in other words: the notes outside the scale just as long as you're careful of where and when you place/play them.

Does anyone know how long Scott has been endorsed by Suhr guitars and was he just touring with custom shop stratocasters ONLY before he got connected w/ Suhr. Just curious. Also, did Scott record Dog Party on a Matchless amp? I know he uses Custom Audio stuff now.

I have no idea, but if I remember correctly, John Suhr worked at FenderÂ’s Custom Shop, so perhaps his custom shop Strats were done by Suhr

Well, I know his strat (Fiesta Red) on Tore Down House was a Custom Shop one which John said wasn't that good, it was heavy and not very resonant but had his V60 pickups in it back then. I guess he sold that strat after Tore Down House was recorded. I was interested in if anyone knows what strat that was on Dog Party though? I hear it had Fralin Woodstock pickups in it.

Maybe it was his 82' 54 reissue Fender Stratocaster.

RW is gonna hate us for turning his Forum into a "chat romm" but to be honest with you i was(am) a little on the unsociable side and never really hung out or got to know anyone from the school except some guitar player from Jersey that was a big Metallic fan and played an explorer(white)(the guitar)I think his name was Eric.Again my apologies RW.

Hey, its cool dude...tell me, where is musicians institute in California? Can you get an actual degree there? Do they got a website? I think my teacher went there but he told me that he had to go to another college to complete his regular class requirements and then went over there for his music classes.

Hey RW, Musicians institute is in Hollywood right off hollywood BLVD.Not far from that Chinese theater Or at least it was. They do give you a degree if you fulfill all thier requirements. as far as a website is concerned I'm really not sure if they have one but i imagine they would/should. It was a great learning experience, aside from Mr. Henderson there were other monster players some of them teachers and some of them students, alot of knowledge floating around in that place and surprisingly not alot of egos. I would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about going to music school. Just beware the EARTHQUAKES.
Mr. Hanky, I bought the Thick CD like you suggested yesterday. It is a very cool disc. I havent been too impressed with some of the Tech stuff I have heard before, but this CD is very cool. It is different but I like how they do a lot of the experimental stuff and how he uses effects and everything. Most people wouldnt think of using octavias, overdrives and delays in fusion but its cool. I heard Hendrix was going to try and record a jazz CD before he ended up dying and my guess is this would be probably the kind of style he would have done it like. Thanks for the recommendation though. Im suprised how similar his playing on this is to Tore Down House. Its almost exactly like his blues playing only he doesnt bend quiet as much and has a different phrasing. I particularly like Slick and Jalepeno. Thanks again.
