I used this program, to write the tab:

It's a freeware, called Instab.


I don't know why the chord names didn't line up with the chords. They're in the right order, though.

It's a simple progression. But, it's great at a jam session. Everyone can pick up on it, quickly. Plus, you can play a simple Gm Pentatonic over it. Or, you can do a lot more.

What would you guys do with this progression? I'd love to hear everyone's ideas!

I always thought those were the changes? Or maybe Ebmaj7 instead.

You could do Cm7b5 or Cm11b5 for the 1st chord (D#).
Or, Abma7 ( or with a b5) to D7#9 to Gm.

Or here's the way maybe Al Jarreau or the Crusaders would do it:
Abmaj7 - Dm7 - F/G - Gm
/ / / / - //// - //// - ////

Yeah! I like those. I was digging both subs for the D#9. I liked the AbM7, or the Cm7b5, in place of the D#9.
I also liked playing both. Cm7b5 to AbM7 (both chords subbing for the D#9), to D7#9 to Gm.

Variations of this move are in Old Love (Clapton/Cray), Stairway To Heaven (With an additional High ascending voice), and a Lot of cool tunes. Try slapping it into a slow Blues.



Okay, chord names still not lining up with the tabs. The ^ symbol, is for the Harmonics. Still trying to figure out the best way to get everything to line up! Confused

Okay, here's a nice set of changes. 8 bars. How would you voice these?

Barre chords? Smooth voice leading? Guide Tones only? Extended chords?

You could also put a "C" on top of all those changes - except for maybe the G/B, it would probably change to a Bm7#5 (very Steely Dan) or possibly a Gsus. Same with the Em7 = Em7#5.

Pedals, amps and guitars are cool but "music" is actually way cooler. Hang here when you've lost sight of what you were looking for tone wise. Let the music set you free my brother.

Yeah sometime you realise that the thrill of the new toy is just to get the new riff or chord... and you want to seek just teh riff and chord after a while. All is good you can take a break from the tone quest and get on the chord/riff/scales etc quest... switch back and forth Wink

But be carefull not to swing too much or rumors will start that you like it both ways. If like most musicians you can live and use rumors well get out of the closet and enjioy the BI status Big Grin This ain't the dark side afterall Razz

Well said Ken. I do think, actually I know my playing has lessened since diggin into tone, but I've learned other things that has helped. I think after playing for so many years, grooves (good and bad) become an aspect of your playing.
Also, fot the longest time I always seemed to focus on technique instead of scales, riffs, etc. I know everything goes in circles, but my circles tend to be 5 years long!

It was a line in an old BK jingle about them making the burger the way you wanted it ... "have it your way" (B, C, D, G) at Burger King. Anyway ... back to guitar.

Mr. Manilow, I think......

Anyway, I can't take credit for this week's changes. They're from Carl Verheyen's "A Place For Me". Great tune! I keep going back to it. I think his songwriting and voice are a step ahead of the other "Guitar Greats" types we all love. Good voice, good lyrics, and a unique approach. "Six" is a really good CD.

I'm going to try and work some ideas out, using this progression. I think it's a good focus for me. I will try and incorporate some of the ideas and conceptd we've discussed here, on the forum.
If I can get a decent sounding backing track recorded, I'll post it for sharing. So you guys can mess with it, too.

mendzel try using GuitarCodex to help you I use that to find names to chord shape I just stumble upon and from that study them furthermore into inversion etc. Wink
