Anybody played the cheap gretsch guitars in the synchromatic and electromatic series? I almost bought an electromatic sparkle jet and then a synchromatic double jet, but decided against it because I couldnt find any sound files online.
Ibanez Artcore AM73T -> Johnson Pedal tuner -> TS-9 Tubescreamer (true bypass, 808, brown mods)-> "Death Drive" distortion-> Fulltone 70 -> Boss CH-1-> Akai Intelliphase-> Visual Sound H2O-> Vox V847 Wah-> Fender Hot Rod Deluxe |

Gretsch 6122SP 'Harrison' model.
When I was a kid, I had a Gretsch Country Gentleman. It was my first rockin' guitar. Once I learned to play lead better, I realized that I couldn't play much higher than octave G on this guitar because of the neck heel. So, after a couple of years, I sold it and bought a new 1969 Gibson SG Custom. I still have the Custom, and have missed the big Gretsch. Last fall I saw in Guitar Player that Gretsch had re-issued the Gretsch 6122 with the dual string dampers, like the one George Harrison played back in the early '60's. I had to have one again. Now that I have more than enough guitars that I can play high up the neck on. So, I purchased a new Gretsch 6122SP. The guitar has beautiful intonation, for a 'bar' bridge guitar. It also has extremely wonderful sustain. I don't remember natural sustain like that on my old 1967 model. The vibe of the guitar is very 'groovy'. It's got the Bigsby vibrato, dual string dampers, master volume control, standby switch, and toggle-switch tone control, as well as the very cool stepped tuners. The instrument also sports a back pad to protect it from belt buckles. The guitar's pickups are TV Jones pickups. They got an intense drive. Much more drive than one would expect from a big hollow body guitar. Oh yeah, the f-holes are the 'painted' kind, to keep the guitar from feeding back. I love this guitar. It's so nice to finally have another one after all of these years. It is a really great guitar for old rock and roll tunes, as well as a superb guitar for use with a finger-picking style. The Gretsch Company has outdone themselves with this guitar. This is a pic of my original 1967 Gretsch Country Gentleman. Notice the ES-335 and the Fender Jazz Bass as well. Pix of the 2004 Gretsch 6122SP. Mesadude |

superb !
but what is this big black "O" & what are "peinted f-holes"... like fake holes ? |

The big, black 'O' is a snap-on back pad, which has always been a feature of this style Gretsch guitar.
Yep, the f-holes are painted on. This has been a standard feature of this guitar also. It's done this way to help prevent unwanted feedback when playing live, on-stage, etc. It works very well too. I haven't had the thing feedback on me yet. Mesadude

thks, and what are the two red spots with kinda metal knobs on it, near the bridge ? |

Well, they activate the string dampers. Ever heard "Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter"? The string dampers are two sponge-rubber bars. One under the first 3 strings, and one under the last 3 strings, between the bridge pickup and the bridge. If you look closely at the above pix you can see them; little black things. You rock one knob up, and it raises one of the dampers and pushes it against the strings. This is a 'very' useful effect (NOT)!. More of a conversation piece than an actual useable feature; unless of course your band is playing "Mrs. Brown". And, by the way, Herman's Hermit's guitar player didn't have these dampers when he did the song. He tied a handkerchief around the strings! Mesadude
