Hi Folks,
I'm a newbie here on the site and this is my first post, so please be kind in your replies I am a big fan of PRS guitars and have owned most models they make. My two favorite models are the Custom 22 (CU22)and McCarty. At present my #1 guitar is a 1999 PRS CU22. My guitar weighs in at a spectacular 6 lbs 14oz and has an amber 10 top and birds. If the guitar's weight and appearance were any indication of the quality then you should play and listen to this guitar. The 5 position rotary switch gets me every tone from Les Paul (thick and thin) to a passable set of Strat tones. It is the most versatile and incredible guitar I've ever played. I thought all CU22's would be this good, but subsequent efforts at purchasing back ups have not been as good. There is a lot of variability here and this one is the best I've ever played. As for the CU22 vs. 24....I prefer the covered pups on the CU22 and just feel more comfortable on a 22 fret neck...it is as if I have a tonal sweet spot on the 22 that I lack on the 24. I play primarily classic rock and blues and this guitar can handle anything I throw it (which isn't that much since I'm not a great player). As for the McCarty....this is the best LP style guitar I've played....it has 2 humbuckers...great LP style fat neck (all are wide fat designs) and all the tone you could want for Classic rock. The guitar has a push/pull knob to get a split coil, but it loses too much volume and tone in this setting to be useful for me. Ok....you can't go wrong with either guitar...if you want the best LP style guitar...go for the McCarty...if you want it all and more sounds...then try a CU22..... Cheers, Andy |

imo the reason your prs custom 22 is more desirable than a 24 is the fact that a 22 has a different sweet spot than a 24 due to the distance between pickups...the 22's neck pu is two frets closer to the nut! thus more tone in a better location. when have you ever seen a les paul with a 24 fret neck?

if you really want to get a mccarty ,try & find a '94 model, the first year they made them. it was before all the options,& before the coil-tap
was introduced. the 94's were perfect.fat sounding & warm. then they changed the pick-ups to allow for the tap,& the type of silver in the p/u covers. nothing real drastic, but enough to change the original sound.they are still great guitars, but for the first year they were magical- the prs '59 les paul. i have 2 '94 mccartys: one is #43 of the first 100, signed by ted mccarty & prs.the other is a regular 94 model in the mccarty burst.the first non-fender type guitars i have owned in years.i wish i had a digital camera! t.l.a.m.f. ! |

I currently own 5 electrics: LP Classic, Tele Plus, Jackson Soloist w ZW emg's, Steinberger GL4T all Graphite......just bought a 97 Custom 24......not a 10 Top and moon inlays....but OMG what a player she is. I'm in love. This guitar is "The One." You just "know" when u'v found "The One." Only thing I'm not crazy about is the twisting 5-way selector p/u switch. Maybe in time I will learn to like it, but everything else about it I simply love. I't like someone built ME a guitar....just took us a few years to find each other.
